ART:is.t.ouchable

When I had an art studio in Berkeley, Calif., I met a round of humble artists who surrounded me with talent and kindness. Artists are one of a kind human beings. They exist in their own realms and should be considered as their own group. When I am around artists, I am comfortable and feel safe in the confines of conservative culture. I find that without artists, there would be no tactility to objects that resemble the human touch. One Saturday, there was a sidewalk sale. I met a woman who had her ceramics laid out on a table. I was drawn to a vase that was rather sitting in her studio. I pointed to it. A little vase, glazed, and shiny. It looked like an organ from the body, the stomach, or a kidney. Its ventricle cut at its top. Hollow for water and a flower. I was drawn to the object that she mentioned she was going to throw away. I bought it. I brought it home and kept it simply displayed on its own. No flower. No water. Just a glazed organ sitting on my counter.
